DESCRIPTION
I checked the weather, got permission from my parents, and within an hour, Ben and I were on our way to Crater Lake. We arrived at the North Crater Trailhead at sunset, and started hiking down the 10 mile trail into the night. Each of us carrying very heavy packs full of camera gear and camping equipment, we struggled through the deep snow. About halfway into the hike, we were really tired, and the intensely orange rising moon legitimately scared us both half to death. I know it sounds crazy but it was SO orange, that through the trees we could not figure out what in the world it was-- forest fire, cabin window.... maybe we were just really tired, but as weird as it sounds, the moon legitimately confused us. At about 11:30 at night, and about 8 miles into the hike, we stopped and set up camp, but neither of us got any sleep in the freezing conditions. We got back up at 5am, and finished out the hike, making it to the lake minutes before sunrise. Completely exhausted and frozen, we explored a little around the lake, and then made our way back to camp. Once we arrived back at camp, both us us just slumped over in the snow and stared into the sky out of compete exhuastion.... the only problem was we were still 8 miles from our car. Long story short, it was a LONG day back to our car, but totally worth it!
